Position Summary: Responsible for organizing and implementing a therapy program to meet the needs of speech, language, and hearing impaired students and meeting the duties of teaching and service delivery as outlined in laws and policies. 

 

Job Type: Full-Time

Contract: 10 Month

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

Master’s Degree and valid BASLP state license from the Department of Health Professions Desired qualifications:  Certificate of Clinical Competence

 

Essential Functions: 

  • Assists and guides teachers in observing, describing, and referring students suspected and identified as having speech and language impairments.
  • Provides a thorough assessment and diagnosis of speech, voice, fluency, and language impairments.
  • Provides screening to identify speech and/or language impaired children at regular intervals and at specified levels.
  • Assists in proper referrals of individuals to agencies and specialists in the community as appropriate.    
  • Provides appropriate individualized programs of therapy to meet individual students’ needs and corrects existing speech and/or language impairments.     
  • Collaborates with classroom teachers and other school staff members.   
  • Provides information, support, and training to parents and families when appropriate.    
  • Provides staff development and serves as a consultant to teachers and school staff members on topics concerning speech and/or language.    
  • Keeps thorough cumulative records for each student receiving therapy or other school-provided speech services.   
  • Maintains lists of referred, screened, and eligible students, as well as a directory of outside agencies, consultants, specialists, and related services.      
  • Compiles case history data on those cases where additional family history, health history, or early intervention was significant.    
  • Assumes primary responsibility for requisitioning and maintaining needed equipment and supplies.    
  • Completes the necessary paperwork on students that qualify for Medicaid reimbursement.    
  • Functions as a member of the multi-disciplinary assessment team for a child who has been referred for services.    
  • Follows and complies with state, federal, and local guidelines in writing IEPs and complying with other regulatory requirements.
  • Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned by the supervisor.
  • Assesses the need for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and implements appropriate AAC interventions for individuals with complex communication needs.
  • Provides training and support to teachers and staff on the use of AAC systems when applicable.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

Thorough knowledge of the subject(s) taught; thorough knowledge of primary, elementary, middle, high school or special education principles, practices and procedures; thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching; thorough knowledge of school system rules, regulations and procedures; ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports; skill in the use of personal computers and related software packages, hardware and peripheral equipment; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, students and parents.

 

Education and Experience: 

Master’s Degree and valid BASLP state license from the Department of Health Professions Desired qualifications:  Certificate of Clinical Competence, AAC Experience 

 

Physical Requirements: Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (up to 50 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
