Position: English Teacher

 

Position Summary: Performs intermediate professional work providing teaching and/or training services to students in general instruction or in a specialized subject or assigned group of subjects, motivating students to develop skill in assigned subject matters, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Department Head/Head Teacher and school principal. Limited supervision is exercised over Paraprofessionals.

Essential Functions: 

• Instructional Responsibilities

  1. Lesson Planning and Preparation

     • Develop engaging and comprehensive lesson plans aligned with curriculum standards.
     • Incorporate diverse teaching strategies to address various learning styles and abilities.
     • Design units and projects that connect literature, writing, and language skills.

  2. Teaching Literature

     • Facilitate the study of classic and contemporary works of fiction, poetry, drama, and non-fiction.
     • Teach critical analysis of texts, including themes, literary devices, and historical contexts.
     • Encourage students to explore diverse voices and perspectives in literature.

  3. Writing Instruction

     • Teach the writing process, including brainstorming, drafting, revising, and editing.
     • Focus on various types of writing: analytical essays, research papers, creative writing, and personal narratives.
     • Provide feedback to improve grammar, structure, style, and clarity.

  4. Language Skills Development

     • Teach grammar, vocabulary, punctuation, and sentence structure.
     • Help students develop oral communication skills through presentations, discussions, and debates.
     • Foster reading comprehension and critical thinking.

  5. Assessment and Evaluation

     • Create and grade assignments, quizzes, essays, and exams.
     • Use rubrics and provide constructive feedback to guide student improvement.
     • Assess student progress against learning objectives and standards.

  6. Differentiated Instruction

     • Adapt teaching methods and materials to meet the needs of diverse learners, including English Language Learners (ELLs) and students with disabilities.
     • Offer extra support or advanced challenges to students as needed.

  1. Record Keeping

     • Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, and assignments.
     • Document student progress and behavior for parent-teacher conferences and administrative reviews.

  2. Collaboration with Colleagues

     • Work with other teachers to align curriculum and share teaching strategies.
     • Participate in school-wide initiatives, committees, or projects.

  3. Communication

     • Regularly communicate with parents/guardians about student performance and classroom updates.
     • Coordinate with counselors or administrators for student support when necessary.

  4. Adherence to Policies

     • Follow school, district, and state regulations regarding curriculum, assessment, and classroom management.

Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree with coursework in assigned specialty area, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Physical Requirements: This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires walking and occasionally requires sitting and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, depth perception and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, playground, classroom, light traffic).
